what your heart needs for the hard days :: a review
Maybe your marriage is taking strain. Maybe the kids are giving you a run for your money. Maybe your car needs new tires and you just don't have the cash. Perhaps you just received an unwanted diagnosis from your doctor ... or maybe you're just flat out burned out. Maybe you feel like God has abandoned you, or given up on you altogether. Perhaps you're wondering how you'll ever make it through this dark season. Whatever the case may be, we all have hard days. We all go through periods of time, sometimes even weeks or months when life is more challenging than usual, and we feel...
five minute friday :: whisper
Welcome to Five Minute Friday -- the flash mob of brave writers who feverishly tap out five minutes of unediting beauty and post it for all the world to see .. If this is your first time, all of the details are over here: https://katemotaung.com/five-minute-friday/ So, this week, I have a confession to make: I didn't choose a Featured Five Minute Friday post this time around. {begs on hands and knees for forgiveness} We were away for Labor Day weekend with no internet or cell phone reception, then the kids started school this week and ohmygoodness, is anyone else trying to catch...
A Screwtape Letter on Racial Diversity
The following letter on racial diversity is a play on the brilliant work of C.S. Lewis in his book, The Screwtape Letters -- a collection of letters written by a chief demon, Screwtape, to his nephew and protege, Wormwood. The idea was also inspired by a very thought-provoking post written by my friend, Bronwyn Lea, on the World Vision debate earlier this year. If the fictional demon Screwtape wrote a letter about racial diversity to his protege, Wormwood, what might he say? My dear Wormwood, I see from the news headlines recently that much of your work in generations past...

Yay! You're back! It's that time of the week again ... Time for our crazy, unedited flash mob free write! If you're not sure how Five Minute Friday works, all the details are right over here. Money-Saving Mom, bless her heart, has shared the need with her readers, and today the number dropped down...
the reason we’re all a little bit homesick
When I stepped onto that plane for my first ever flight to Cape Town, little did I know just how much things would change. A few weeks shy of twenty-one, my plan was to stay for six months. His plan kept me there for a decade, gave me a husband and three kids, and stained my heart with Rooibos tea and red African soil. His plan took my definition of home, tore it up, and tossed it out the passenger seat window, where it caught the southeaster, never to be seen again. It's my privilege to be over at Emily Wierenga's site, talking about the reason we're all a little bit...
five minute friday :: change
Welcome to Five Minute Friday! If you're new here, you can catch the scoop and all the details over here. And guess what? You did it! You made it to the end of another week. Whew, and what a week it has been. Anyone else feeling bogged down by all the yuck in the world? I, for one, am so grateful for the uplifting stories in the midst of the muck, stories like the amazing one shared by Lisa-Jo on what *you* have done in the midst of the dirty dishes and piles of laundry .. have you heard? As of this afternoon, there was only $4,472 left to go out of a whopping $50,000 raised...
when you’re going through a deep, dark valley
I'm honored to be over at the lovely site, I Love Devotionals. I first met Wendy, the founder of the site, via our mutual involvement as writers for iBelieve.com. I quickly felt a connection with her, as she is South African, and has had to walk the journey as a cancer caregiver. Wendy's husband was diagnosed shortly after their wedding, and much of her writing and the devotions on her site have been inspired by her experience. Click on over and check out her beautiful site! We were having a Ladies Coffee Morning at our church, and I was the MC. To be honest, I can’t even remember...
Teaching Kids about God’s Providence
Sometimes, lessons about God's providence have to be learned the hard way. This story is one such instance: One sunny, humid, 80-degree day in August, I told my kids that some friends had invited us to go boating the next day. They were ecstatic. The last time they'd been on a boat was more than three years earlier. They counted the hours with giddy anticipation. The next morning, we woke up to rain. And thunder. And lots of rain. My husband called from work around 9:30 in the morning and said our boating adventure had been postponed because of the weather. As I conveyed the news...
interview with ashleigh slater, author of team us: marriage together
Today I'm thrilled to welcome Ashleigh Slater, author of Team Us: Marriage Together. I've had the privilege of getting to know Ashleigh online over the past three years, through her role as the founder and editor of Ungrind Webzine. Ashleigh and her husband Ted have four daughters, and live in Atlanta. Her first book, Team Us, released in June this year, and I had the privilege of being part of the launch team. My review of this great book can be found here. But today, Ashleigh is here with us to answer a few questions about her book, her marriage, and her journey in grace. Without...
