five minute friday :: bacon {day 30}

Well, you've done it. I should've known this would happen. I promise to let you choose the prompts for a whole month, and you go and make this your most voted for word:     That's why I love you guys. You've become my people. You're quirky and kind, encouraging and gifted. And a little bit crazy, sometimes.     Look around, and you'll see the body in this place. You'll find recent grads and recent retirees. Widows and orphans. Singles, marrieds, and divorcees. Abuse survivors and cancer survivors. Homeschooling mamas and working grandmothers. Students and missionaries,...

for the days when i need to be put back in my place {day 29 :: sea}

It's Day 29 of 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes, and I'm SO proud of all of you for hanging in there for the long haul! I hope you've enjoyed and benefited from this series as much as I have. Today's prompt is: SEA     Setting the timer for five minutes, and ... GO.   There's a song called Oceans by Ten Shekel Shirt. I can't tell you how many times I've stood on a salty shoreline and this song has welled up within my chest. The chorus goes like this: There's something about the ocean Makes me rise up and praise There's something about the heavens Makes me stand in awe...

one thing Christians have that other people don’t {day 28 :: hope}

I realise this post has the potential to spark a measure of controversy, though that's certainly not my intention. Here are some questions for you: What makes Christians different from those who don't love Jesus? What do they have that non-Christians don't possess? What marks them and sets them apart from the rest of mankind? You might be thinking of the word, "forgiveness." Amen, and thank God for it. Forgiveness is a huge aspect that sets Christians apart from those who are not. The presence of the Holy Spirit is another major component we shouldn't ignore. There's another significant...

the power of perhaps {day 27 :: perhaps}

Perhaps is a loaded word. A powerful word. Not powerful in its punch, but rather its quiet presence. Powerful in the way it is trailed by an invisible ellipsis and a lingering question mark. Perhaps is powerful in the way it commands attention from the future. It's powerful in the infinite possibilities that could come after it. What follows could be absolutely anything.     Perhaps you'll be a movie star one day. Perhaps you'll live on the street. Perhaps you'll have children. Perhaps you'll spend your life in a longing unfulfilled. Perhaps you'll get married and live happily...

in case you forgot … {day 26 :: whisper}

I lean in close as I tuck him into his bed at night. Cupping my hand to his ear, I whisper into the darkness, "I have a secret." I feel his eight-year-old frame perk up with interest. "What?" he whispers back. "I love you." "Mo-ommm! That's not a secret!" he complains loudly, the holy hush now broken. We both laugh as I feign surprise. "It's not?!" "No! Everybody knows that!" I know he's smiling, even though I can't see his lips. And I think about God, and how in His infinite mercy and kindness, He leans into me in the darkest of nights and whispers into my ear, "I love you."  ...

what imprint do you want your life to leave? {day 25 :: crash}

Confession: I don't love crowds.     I'm not claustrophobic or anything, I'm just not crowd-crazy. I don't thrive in densely populated environments. I'd much rather have a quiet, intimate gathering of close friends than a rock concert in a packed stadium. But whether I'm in the grocery store or the library, church or a sporting event, my life is going to collide with the lives of other people.     [Tweet "Through normal, daily interactions, we're bound to crash into each other."] The question is how gracefully we'll respond to these collisions. Most are pleasant...

the many sounds of silence {day 24 :: silence}

Silence is both friend and foe. I long for it, and push it away. I relish and despise it. Silence evokes such a vast cacophony of emotions: .. the welcome silence when the kids are finally tucked into bed after a rambunctious day; .. the comfortable silence on a long stretch of road, driver and passenger each lost and content in his own thoughts; .. the unbridled silence of awe and wonder when taking in the sprawling grandeur of creation.     There's the frustrating, lingering silence that seems to never end while waiting impatiently upon the Lord; .. the anguishing silence that...

what do you value most? {day 22 :: value}

We find them hidden in our disappointments. They're tucked away, often unseen, until something happens to make our hearts sink -- then they rise up. Our values. Have you ever stopped to consider what yours are? Like, really pause and intentionally consider what you hold near and dear? I think of the rich young ruler who came to Jesus asking how to be saved. You remember what Jesus told him: "Go, sell your possessions, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me" (Matthew 19:21). And how did the man respond? With eagerness and obedience? No -- "he went...

On Seeing Our Smallness {Day 21 :: Wave}

I've told this story before. We were at the edge of the Atlantic. The mighty ocean that stretched far and away, beyond what our minds could comprehend. My three-year-old, barefoot and brazen, took several steps into the cool water every time a wave receded. Then, as soon as the next mass threatened to crash at his toes, he turned and ran as fast as he could. He taunted the sea. In his finite mind, he was the victor. He was winning at his own game. And the look on his proud face said it all -- he felt on top of the world. Invincible. He could outrun the ocean. As I stood behind him, more...
