[Tweet "We're #writing on LIMIT at Five Minute Friday; join us?"] GO. Being bedridden from illness in December and concussed in January after a head injury, I've become so much more aware of my limitations. I've had to force myself into habits of rest, sitting down or going to bed early for the sake of...

Confession: I'm easily distracted. Not quite as bad as Dug, the dog from the animated movie, Up, (squirrel!) -- but nearly. I rarely have only one thing going at once. I'm a multi-tasking, multiple-tabs-open-at-the-same-time...
five minute friday :: quiet

on working together and fighting for the same team
"I feel like you're always working against me!" I complained to my kids. "I wipe up the mess you made on the counter, turn around, and you make a new mess! I clear your papers from the table, and you leave your toys on the carpet! If we could work together on the same team with the same goal of keeping the house at least somewhat tidy, it would make life a whole lot easier!" They listen dutifully, then go and play. I look at them through the window now. It hasn't stopped snowing today. A slow, steady snowfall with light, fluffy flakes. They've been begging to go outside for days. Finally,...
on seeing change as a gift
I homeschooled my three kids for five years straight. Like any endeavor, it had its pros and cons, but overall, homeschooling fit our family well. Then God opened the door for my kids to attend a small Christian school. In the weeks before their first day, we ambled through store aisles, armed with much excitement and three separate school supply lists. At home, they eagerly scrawled their names with black Sharpies across each glue stick, crayon box and pair of scissors. They were ready. The first day of school arrived, and a mix of emotions swirled with the acid in my stomach. I...

the value and power of historical fiction {plus a special edition link-up!}
Happy Monday! I'm honored to be guest hosting this week for Literacy Musing Mondays -- a fun, regular link-up I've enjoyed over at the internet homes of Mary Hill, Ashley Hales, Leslie, and Tami! While I'm only guest hosting this week, you can join them every Monday with a literacy-related post by clicking here! *** Confession: I'm not a history lover. I'm terrible with remembering dates and details and who fits where. I don't love history, but I've grown to love historical fiction. Why? It makes history come alive. It picks me up and plonks me down in the middle of a different era, and...
five minute friday :: first {plus special deals & a giveaway!}
Happy New Year! I've missed you! We took two weeks off from our regular Five Minute Friday gatherings, and it's SO GOOD to be back! Thank you for all who prayed and commented on my final FMF post from last year, when I shared that I had been sick. I was quite severely ill for 20 days, then upon my recovery, I promptly slipped on Michigan ice, split my head on a brick step and got to ride in an ambulance to get internal stitches and five staples in the back of my head. Staples are still in, but I'm back in action, celebrating God's gracious protection in the past month, and SO EXCITED to...
three truths to remember when “happy new year” isn’t enough
All you need to do is take one glance at the news, and you’ll see it. This blurry film of despondency that seems to cast a haziness on all we see and hear. The world is chock full of threats and despair. Sadness abounds. Anxiety mounts. The political future of our country is uncertain. New fears pop up every day. Cancer rages on. Hardships press in on every side. We’ve just come off the holidays and we’re still lingering in the revelry of family gatherings and festive celebrations. But sometimes when we look around, the standard phrase, "Happy New Year!" just doesn't seem to be...
