Pros and Cons of Self-publishing vs. Traditional Publishing
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about self-publishing vs. traditional publishing. There are so many options out there these days, it can be tricky to wade through the possibilities. Here are some of the pros and cons I’ve come up with so far. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Feel free to weigh in! Self-publishing Even within the realm of self-publishing, there are dozens of options. You could technically just go on to Amazon, upload your own work for free, and announce it to the world. Voila. For virtually no monetary cost at all, you could be published. Or, if...

on claiming identity as a writer
“I heard you’re a writer.” Her five, soft-spoken words stopped me in my tracks. I looked down a full twelve inches and caught a sparkle of awe in her smiling eyes. “Who told you that?” I questioned, an airy laugh of surprise escaping from my lips. “My mom,” she answered, still smiling. Still waiting for a response. Lockers opened and slammed all around us. Kids buzzed this way and that, filling the air with after-school chatter. “I do like to write,” I finally replied. My face flushed as I saw the large arc I had tiptoed around to successfully avoid admission. She’s a ten-year-old girl, I...

what I learned from having a brain scan
After an initial appointment with my family doctor, I found myself sitting in an unfamiliar office, explaining my symptoms to a neurologist. Completely stumped, he concluded, “Well, the first thing we’ll have to do is get in there and see what’s going on. I’m going to order and MRI of the brain. Are you claustrophobic?” A brain scan was not what I was expecting. I listened as intently as possible while he rattled off the details of the procedure, asking numerous times if I was claustrophobic and whether I was allergic to contrast dye, and telling me I couldn’t wear anything metal during...
the beach ball incident :: a pivotal parenting moment
He’d been in our home for a week. We had a three-and-a-half year-old girl and an eighteen month-old boy when we added to our family through adoption. My husband’s orphaned cousin was almost seven when he came to live with us. Becoming the mom of a six-year-old was a steep learning curve, to say the least. I’m talking sink or swim. A week in, and he was bouncing a beach ball in the living room. I did a quick visual scan of the room and a quicker mental calculation, and wagered that the beach ball wasn’t a major source of concern. After all, there was really only one breakable thing within...

five words I say to my kids
My pastor spoke the words during one of his Sunday morning sermons, and the line stuck with me ever since. Standing in the crow’s nest pulpit perched on the right side of the sanctuary, he told the congregation what he would say to his girls every morning as he dropped them off at school. Five years later, I find myself reciting the very same words to my own three kids each day as they slide the van door open in the school parking lot. I'm over at iBelieve.com today sharing The Five Words I Say to My Kids Every Day. Join me by clicking here for the rest of this article? ...
