why it’s helpful to have a proper perspective {day 20 :: temporary}
If I had to name a single theme that has dominated my life in the past decade and a half, or a lesson that keeps coming to the surface, it would be this: That this life and everything in it are temporary. The only things that last are God, His Word, and heaven. The Lord has reminded me of these truths time and time again, through countless circumstances and experiences. Being a renter and never a homeowner is one such circumstance. Moving ten times in the same city, and making two transatlantic moves have also cemented these realities into the forefront of my mind. Remembering that this...
what does it mean to honor your parents? {day 19 :: honor}
Happy Monday to you! We've reached Day 19 in our series, 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes, and today's prompt is: HONOR. When I think of the word "honor," the first thing that comes to mind is the fifth commandment: "Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you" (Exodus 20:12). In the New Testament, Ephesians 6:2 tells us this is the first commandment with a promise. But what exactly does it mean to honor our father and mother? [Tweet "What does it mean to honor your father and mother?"] I would say it boils down to...
for the days when you feel worthless {day 18 :: worth}
Worth. Those five letters are enough to make us sort of cringe up inside of ourselves and cocoon away for a season, aren't they? We're bombarded from every side by media, society and culture telling us in shouts and whispers that we need to be more, do more, look more appealing. It's enough to crush our sense of worth. It's enough to crush the truth. We've all believed it, haven't we? This lie that the we are worthless as we are. We look around and see others as prettier, more successful, more productive than we are -- and we think their lives have more worth. So we curl up in our corners...
what do you have to offer? {day 17 :: offer}
I think this prompt is one of my favorites. Maybe it's because it reminds me of the writers' conference I just attended last weekend. To say the conference was motivating and inspiring would be an understatement. In the final address, keynote speaker Stephen James retold the parable of the talents. He encouraged us, as Christian writers, to use the talents, ideas, gifts, and words that God has given us -- not to bury them. The last quote I have scribbled in my notebook is this: "Take the ideas God gives to you, offer them up to Him, and tell Him you're not going to bury them anymore."...

when laughter is a gift {day 15 :: laugh}
If you're participating in Write 31 Days, congratulations! We made it to the halfway mark! #fistbump If you're following along with 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes, today's prompt is: LAUGH I come from a family of story tellers. We all jump at every chance we can get to tell a story. If there's a good one, we pretty much trip over each other to be able to tell it first. The best stories are the funny ones. The ones that we can barely get through, we're holding our stomachs from laughing so hard. One such story came at a time I never expected. My sister and I were gathered...
when somebody gives you wings {day 14 :: fly}
When my kids ask me what super power I wish I possessed, I always give them the same answer: "I'd like to be able to fly." Over a year ago, a friend showed me that it's possible. She showed me my wings, gave me a little nudge, and pushed me out of the nest. Has anyone ever done that for you? When Lisa-Jo Baker asked me to take over as host of the Five Minute Friday community, she took a great risk. I'd never done anything like that before, and Five Minute Friday was her baby. What if I failed? What if I spread my wings, flapped furiously a few times, and fell flat on my face? But Lisa-Jo...
a prayer for patience {day 13 :: patience}
Welcome to Day 13 of 31 Day of Five Minute Free Writes! We're writing for five minutes a day during the month of October using one word prompts. The prompts were selected at random from votes submitted by Heading Home readers. To see the full list, click here. Today's word is: PATIENCE ... Setting my timer for five minutes, and ... GO. It's quite possibly the most frequent prayer I pray: Lord, help me to be patient. I lack patience. Quite severely. It's a deficit that hourly needs to be refueled. So today, I'd like to share a prayer for all of us who need to ask the...
do we make a run for it, or wait it out? {day 12 :: storm}
Several years ago, my husband, kids and I were making the 10-hour trek from Cape Town to Kimberley, South Africa. We were somewhere in the vast expanse of the Karoo when fast-moving, dark clouds threatened from behind. As providence would have it, we needed to stop for petrol. We pulled into the Engen garage and the petrol attendant filled up our car. Of course, then the kids needed the bathroom. We made our way into the convenience store in search of the toilets. While we stood in the queue for our turn, the clouds caught up with us. They burst open, and pellets of hard rain pummeled...
when you have a burden that needs to be lifted {day 11 :: rest}
I love my sleep. Especially in the mornings. I don't mind staying up late at night, but give me my mornings. I love sleep, but I'm not very good at resting. If I'm awake, I'm busy. If it's not this, it's that. I'm just plain not very good at sitting still. If I am sitting, I'm doing something else while I'm sitting -- but I'm definitely not just sitting. Sometimes, this is a weakness. A fault of mine to not be able to just rest. It becomes a fault when doing becomes my default. I think I can do it all myself, solve my own problems, take care of my own crises. The desire to do gets...
