a little bit like me? {day 27 :: free}
I'm thrilled to be able to introduce you to my real-life friend today, Patrice Gopo. Though we are both Americans, Patrice and I met in Cape Town, where she lived for two years. Patrice has been a great encouragement to me, particularly in my own writing. I've also relied heavily on her hair advice ever since my daughter was born. Patrice graciously accepted my invitation to guest post here as part of 31 Days of Life in South Africa -- a series in which every post has been written in five minutes flat. Enjoy her five-minute reflection, and be sure to check out the links to other...

searching for the key {day 23 :: look}
Because my sister is awesome, she surprised me and came to visit in South Africa for my first birthday after our mom had died. She knew it would be a hard one, and wanted to make it as good as possible. She had visited twice before, but we had never taken her further than the suburbs of Cape Town. This time, I wanted to show her Hermanus, a sleepy tourist town along the southern coast of South Africa. On the way, we stopped off at Betty’s Bay to see the penguins on the beach. As soon as we pulled into the gravel parking lot, my daughter excitedly jumped out of the car,...
beauty in the unexpected – a guest post {day 22 :: expect}
It's my pleasure to welcome guest blogger Jen Daugherty today, for Day 22 of 31 Days of Life in South Africa! I 'met' Jen online earlier this year through the fabulous Five Minute Friday community, and was immediately drawn to her writing as she shared of her experience living in South Africa for two years. Jen has been writing along with us for 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes, using the prompts found here. Her #write31days series and mine have overlapped quite significantly, as she is writing through 31 Days of Moments in Africa. It's been so much fun to read of your experience! You...
the hardest peace
This post is dedicated to Kara Tippetts, author of The Hardest Peace: Expecting Grace in the Midst of Life's Hard. Kara, a mother of four who is currently battling cancer, wrote a powerful letter to Brittany Maynard, a 29-year-old cancer patient who has decided to take her own life on November 1st. The letter was published on Ann Voskamp's blog, and has had a huge impact on many, including myself. This post has also been written in conjunction with the #HardestPeace Challenge and Giveaway, sponsored by Litfuse Publicity. *** The two of us knelt on either side of her bed, my...
stolen {day 21 :: second}
It was 10:00pm in South Africa when my cell phone rang. It was my husband, calling from a Bible study meeting held at a friend’s house down the road. “Did you come and get the car?” he asked. “Ummm .. No.” I answered, thinking to myself, Why on earth would I walk several blocks in the dark with kids sleeping at home to get our car and not tell him? “Um, does that mean you don’t have it?” I conclude. “Nope.” Our car was gone. A trip to the police station followed, as well as an incident report and a visit by the police. Friends from Bible study came and sat with me in our house...
fight to win :: my faith heroine
I'm slipping in here for a brief intermission in my 31 Days series to share this story with you. This blog post is part of Michelle DeRusha’s #MyFaithHeroine contest, in connection with the release of the book, 50 Women Every Christian Should Know. Find out how to participate here. If you want to see the measure of a person’s faith, watch them on the battlefield of a trial. For it is on the battleground of suffering and trials where the sheep are separated from the goats, where it becomes clear who is fighting for Team Self and who is fighting...
