an open letter to the future
Our community suffered a great loss this week. An 18-year-old 2015 graduate was killed in a car crash early Sunday morning. Just like that, she was gone. She woke up and probably thought it was going to be a normal day, just like any other. Instead, she met her Maker. By God's grace, she trusted Christ as her Savior and is now enjoying eternity in His presence. A few days ago, my almost ten-year-old daughter asked if she could have Pop Tarts for her upcoming birthday breakfast. Her 8-year-old brother quickly pointed out, "You might not even be here then." It might sound morbid, but my son...
five minute friday :: dream
The Five Minute Friday prompt this week comes compliments of my almost ten-year-old daughter. Her first suggestion was "Imagine" -- but since Lisa-Jo already used that word in the past, we're going with the second word that came to her mind: New to Five Minute Friday? Welcome! We love newcomers! Learn more about this fabulous community here, and go ahead and follow on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to stay in the loop! We also have a super fun Twitter party every Thursday evening at #fmfparty before the prompt is released! Come join us next time! First, some advice...
a testimony of grace :: for testimony tuesday
Today it's my privilege to be sharing a testimony of God's grace over at Holly Barrett's site. Each week Holly hosts a link-up called Testimony Tuesday. Click over to check it out, read some great posts, and link a story of your own! Holly is an active member of the Five Minute Friday community -- and if not for Holly's enthusiastic offer to help on the planning committee, I doubt we'd be having a Five Minute Friday Retreat! Keep reading for my guest post on Holly's blog. A month before I turned 21, I moved from the U.S. to South Africa. My plan was to stay for six months,...
five minute friday :: fear {plus a new video *and* a giveaway!}
I wrote and scheduled the following post before hearing about the horrific church shooting in Charleston. My chest hurts just thinking about it. The prompt I chose several days ago seems timely and applicable. If we're honest, we fear for the future of our nation. We fear for our churches, our families, our friends. Yet, if we learn one thing from this tragedy, let us learn this: "... there are no safe sanctuaries in a fallen world. We are only safe in Christ." ~ Peter Beck, The Gospel Coalition May we tuck ourselves in Him as the only true refuge, and may our fears of this world...
fear and faith :: video interview with author trillia newbell
My arms shook as I lifted them to the clothesline, attempting to hang wet laundry out to dry. I could hear my heart beating in my chest as my eyes darted left and right. I was convinced someone was going to jump over the wall into our rental property. Just like the day before. My eyes kept going back to the wall where the burglar had crouched the previous morning, after he smashed the window next to our back door. Broken glass was still scattered on the ground. My pulse would not slow down. The fear was suffocating. It tightened in my chest and caught my breath in its grip. I had watched...

five minute friday :: gift
Firstly, I have to tell you how amazed I am that 109 of you linked up last week for the prompt, BLUE. I just *love* how you put on your brave and punched out the words, following whatever train of thought came your way. One of my favorite parts of Five Minute Friday is seeing how many different ways you guys can elaborate on a single word. It amazes me. I stand in awe of God's creativity in making each of us so unique. So thank *you* for gifting me with your words week after week! You probably don't realize it, but you show me the character and goodness of God by being part of this...
books to read this season :: 2015 edition
It's the beginning of June! Those of us in the northern hemisphere are gearing up for the long-awaited summer months, while those south of the equator are bundling up for a few chilly winter months. Whether you're getting ready for beach days or nights cuddled up by the fireplace, what better way to celebrate the start of a new season than treating ourselves to a new book (or four). Here are some books I've loved: Fiction: Dear Mr. Knightley: A Novel, by Katherine Reay I adored this debut novel by Katherine Reay. A Jane Austen-loving orphan named Samantha is sponsored by an anonymous...
five minute friday :: blue {plus a special video message from the fmf retreat planning committee!}
Hey everyone! How are you this week? So glad to have you back for another round of Five Minute Friday -- the flash mob of writers who huddle together each week for some good old fashioned free writing and encouragement. This week's prompt is: Ready? GO. Your eyes were blue when you were born. I thought it was genetically impossible, since mine are hazel and your dad is black. But they stayed blue for several months before gradually melting into a gentle hazel, melting me along the way. Today you're eight years old. My youngest. My baby. You...
