The Day the Angels Fell
by Shawn Smucker
The Day the Angels Fell is the first book in a two-book YA fiction series by Shawn Smucker.
Read this one, then grab a copy of the sequel:
The Edge of Over There
by Shawn Smucker
Made Like Martha:
Good News for the Woman Who Gets Things Done
by Katie M. Reid
I had the privilege of reading an advance copy of this book to offer an endorsement, and it was such a blessing to my “try hard” temperament. If you love your To Do List or sometimes think your worth is based on what you accomplish, Made Like Martha is for you.
Born a Crime:
Stories from a South African Childhood
by Trevor Noah
I read this book on the plane ride to South Africa. I do need to give a language warning,
as it is a secular book and is not suitable for young people or sensitive readers.
However, besides the language issue, it is a very well-written, compelling story full of humor and cultural insight.
Waves of Mercy
by Lynn Austin
I’m biased about this book because a) it’s written by one of my all-time favorite fiction authors;
and b) it’s based on the history of my hometown of Holland, Michigan.
Be sure to read this one before the sequel releases in October 2018:
Legacy of Mercy
by Lynn Austin
Legacy of Mercy is the sequel to Waves of Mercy and releases in October 2018.
All the Colors We Will See:
Reflections on Barriers, Brokenness, and Finding Our Way
by Patrice Gopo
This collection of essays by my friend, Patrice Gopo, is absolutely stunning.
If you’re looking for a rich, thought-provoking read, don’t hesitate to get a copy of this beautiful book.
And of course, I’d be honored to have you pick up a copy of my memoir:
A Place to Land:
A Story of Longing and Belonging
by Kate Motaung

I don’t have a recommendation. Although I have several unread books. I guess i need to get started. I’m glad you shared your recommendations. I’ve been doing along term study of Michigan. Involving the roots, heritage and culture. The book on holland is definitely on my list, especially since I was recently told my children have roots there. As well as Trevor Noah, time to take a professional mentors advice read something lighthearted and funny find balance from the gruelling effects of social work, and the thought provoking is definitely fitting to my brain. Although I would add a place to land had left a real and solid imprint on my heart. The writer is brilliantly captivating even to a hard to catch reader or unreader like me!
If you love historical fiction, I recommend The Mark of the King & A Refuge Assured by Jocelyn Green. I also recommend anything by Laura Frantz, but especially her newest, The Lacemaker.
