Today we celebrate my mom’s first birthday in heaven.
Not that she’s keeping track, of course.
A year ago, my sister and I sat on either side of our grandma, doing our utmost to console her choked sobs as she watched her daughter’s casket get lowered into the ground.
Not quite four months later, she joined her eldest daughter in eternity.
Shortly after we got the call about grandma’s passing, my husband said to me, “Remember that picture we have with all four generations? Now only two of you are left.”
What a sobering thought.
As I consider the impact that my grandma and mom had on me (and my daughter), my mind goes to that verse in which Paul says to Timothy, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (2 Timothy 1:5).
I am immeasurably blessed to have had a mother and a grandmother who loved the Lord, and I have no doubt that the Lord used both of them and their prayers as He drew me to Himself.
My grandma passed the baton to my mom, and she didn’t drop it. My mom passed it to me, and now it’s my turn to do the same for my children.
“…we will tell the next generation
the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders he has done.
He decreed statutes for Jacob
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,
and they in turn would tell their children.
Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget his deeds
but would keep his commands.”
(Psalm 78:4-7)
If you have the baton, pass it on. If you don’t have it yet, hurry up and find someone to pass the baton to you.
