five minute friday :: try (plus a giveaway!)
Oh my goodness, there are so many exciting things packed into this post, I can hardly contain myself. First of all, WELCOME! Have I told you lately that I love you? (Did you just hear Rod Stewart singing that to you?) Seriously. I do. Some of you were not impressed by my choice of prompt last week, but you bit the bullet, took on the challenge, and you wrote. And I was so impressed. (I knew you could do it, by the way. Even if you didn't think you could. I never doubted. You guys are amazing.) If you're new here, then an extra special welcome to you! on telling beautiful stories
The Five Minute Friday Retreat is just over a week away! Today, it's my pleasure to welcome Amy Breitmann, Vice President of Marketing for our retreat sponsor, Vi Bella Jewelry! Amy recently traveled to Haiti with Vi Bella, and has some moving words and pictures to share with us from her experience -- AND she's offering the Vi Bella Reagan necklace to one winner in the giveaway below! *** I have always been a storyteller. At ten years old, I coerced my brothers and cousins to dress in costumes, and I directed mini plays with this small cast of characters. About that same time, I began...

when God answers the desperate prayers of our hearts
A month before I turned 21, I boarded a flight bound for Cape Town. My plan was to stay for six months. Two years later, I was still there, speaking vows that wed me to a South African man. Within three years of our wedding day, we had two kids. Just after our second child’s birth, my mom was re-diagnosed with cancer. The breast cancer she endured four years prior had returned with a vengeance, and metastasized throughout her bones, lungs and liver. Eighteen months later, we adopted my husband’s cousin, who was orphaned at the age of six. He spoke no English and had an undiagnosed hearing...
five minute friday :: ten
My firstborn turns ten this week. I might be a little sentimental about the whole thing. Okay, fine, I even wrote Ten Things I Wish I'd Known Before Becoming a Mom as a result of all this recent retrospection. Since we're celebrating ten years of life this weekend, I thought I'd invite y'all to the party with this week's Five Minute Friday prompt: [Tweet "This week's Five Minute Friday prompt is: TEN .. Come write with us!"] Ready? GO. Ten years ago this week, I pushed with all my might when the doctor gave the command, and still you refused to budge....
What I Wish I’d Known Ten Years Ago, Before Becoming a Mom
Ten years ago this week, I was heavily pregnant in Cape Town and due to give birth to my firstborn. My mom flew in from the States for the occasion -- she couldn't wait to meet her first grandchild. We were as ready as we were going to be. This week, my girl turns ten. I might be a little bit sentimental about the whole thing. A whole decade is kind of a big deal. In my moments of retrospection in recent days, I've had to smile and even laugh at some of the things that stressed me out and just plain surprised me in those early days of motherhood. Here are ten things I wish someone had...

five tips for making road trips with kids more enjoyable
We just got back from a fabulous family road trip. After years of traveling with kids, both on the road in South Africa and the U.S., and in the air across the Atlantic, I've learned a few tricks for making traveling easier and more enjoyable. Here are five tips for making road trips with kids more enjoyable: 1. Get your hands on these Laugh Out Loud Pocket Doodle books from Revell Books: I got a girls' version and a boys' version for my kids, and they're great -- perfect for road trips! Also, they're nice and small for easy packing. Each page includes a joke or a riddle,...
Eight Ways Your Husband Silently Shows Love
If you’ve been married for any length of time, you’ve likely observed that you and your husband give and receive love in different ways. Some are more noticeable than others. Here are some ways you might not realize your husband is showing you love. 1. He serves. A couple of years ago, my husband worked second shift on Valentine’s Day. The time that he was supposed to be home came and went. I got worried. Why wasn’t he home? I called him to make sure he was okay. “I’m fine,” he said from the other end of the line. “I’m at Walmart buying toilet paper like you asked me to.” I...
